Jourdelle’s Advocacy Story
Jourdelle is a Family Group Conference coordinator but recently received a referral to be an advocate for a father who was struggling. They met in March, and their initial meeting was very long, the father imparting as much information as he could. Jourdelle listened to how the father felt broken and had nowhere to go due to the current contact agreement stopping him from seeing his son. They continued to meet every day, sometimes calling multiple times a day. The father has a disability and struggled with the plethora of informational literature given to him by the social services; Jourdelle would break it down to make sure he understood. Jourdelle felt that the father could not advocate for himself. Often he went above and beyond to make sure that the father received the support he needed. He contacted the relevant services to intervene and give him support. Everything changed last week when the court order was reviewed, and the father was given full custody. The news changed the father’s life, from having limited contact with his son to having him move in. He called to update Jourdelle over the weekend and was very emotional. Jourdelle spoke about how he tried to empower the man, coaching him on how to speak with the services once their time together was over. Jourdelle spoke about how in his experience as an activist, he has encountered the societal belief that fathers are viewed as inadequate parents. He strongly disagrees with that assumption and thinks this reunion of father and son shows a devoted father who was desperate to be involved in his son’s life. Jourdelle was glad for such a meaningful outcome.
