Camden Conversations

A participatory research project led by the Camden FAB members, Professor Anna Gupta (Royal Holloway, University of London) and Annie (Surviving Safeguarding). The project was supported by Camden Safeguarding Children Board, now Camden Safeguarding Children Partnership.

The family-led enquiry to gather parents and social work professionals to understand their experience of the child protection system and explore ways to improve the service.

The recommendations included: 

  • Develop Independent Peer Advocacy

  • Review of language used

  • Family Group Conferences to be offered

  • Explore community venues, more flexible timing and the role of peer advocacy

  • Child Protection Chair/ IRO to meet family beforehand/between conferences to encourage family input

  • Multi-agency professional to join the meeting,

  • Enable families to understand the Child Protection process

  • Identify creative and digital ways to allow feedback/debrief

  • Multi-disciplinary Camden Conversations Training on “Empowering Families”

  • Opportunities for multi-agency professionals to critically reflect on the Child Protection system,

  • Review support offered to birth parents
