Kar-Man’s Advocacy Story
Kar Man was anxious about her first Parent Peer Advocate assignment. The opportunity to support a parent came up sooner than she thought, but she was willing to learn as she worked. She phoned the parent and was met with resistance at first. Kar Man tried to illuminate the situation by explaining her story of going through Social Services as a parent. She gave the mother reassurance that she was there to give independent support. The mother became more willing to speak, sharing her feelings with Kar Man and expressing her views on her situation. Kar Man gave her advice about effectively conveying her points so the professionals would understand her. The mother cooperated in her Family Group Conference and trusted Kar Man as support outside the professional network. It was raining the day of the FGC. The kind of heavy Summer rain that causes pedestrians to scramble for shelter. Kar Man and the mother left the FGC together, planning to speak while on the way to pick up her child. With only one umbrella between them, they huddled under it as they walked. Kar Man couldn’t believe how cinematic the scene was. The mother spoke about her story and her dreams; it was a special moment of closeness between the two. Since then, the mother has called Kar Man to report what is happening and share the Social Work report with her. Kar Man has felt the benefit of building the relationship slowly and on trust. Her support as an advocate is reminiscent of how her own Social Worker related to her when she was in the mother’s position. She invited the mother to FAB’s Summer Wellness party and the FAB coffee morning, which the mother gladly accepted. Kar Man is particularly grateful for that moment in the rain when they helped each other through the storm.
