Camden Conversation 2

Camden Conversations’ is an exploration of parents’ experiences of social work and child protection through collaboration between parents and professionals. It has been an undercurrent of the last few years of Clarissa’s life. The project originated from the Family Advisory Board founded in 2014. Three key players were Professor Anna Gupta, Annie from Surviving Safeguarding and Clarissa from the Family Advisory board. The inquiry was looking into experiences with Child Protection and to fill in some of the silences between the authorities and the parents. The participatory research project consulted people from across different points of the child protection system in a series of group conversations as well as individual interviews. After much collaboration, the final report was drawn up which put forward a variety of different recommendations on how to improve child protective services. From simply changing the venue to more complex initiatives such as ‘Independent Peer Advocacy’, the recommendations aim to improve the system for the people most vulnerable within it - the families. ‘We are glad to be back’ Clarissa introduced herself to the online seminar. Taking place during Camden’s ‘Practice week’ this online seminar brought the group of colleagues together for the return of the Camden Conversations’ project. With a new set of interviews that have already begun, the seminar was set up as a reflection on the first phase of the project and how the group expect the next step to progress their findings. Professor Anna Gupta spoke about the importance of collaboration and how it improves child protection conferences for all. The seminar spotlighted many voices from across Camden hearing from professionals and parents and their thoughts on how best to work together. From the varied contributions, a few key themes emerged, feedback, support and the value of lived-experiences. The need to make child protection conferences less daunting for parents was mentioned by both parents and professionals. Clarissa has done plenty of work to enrich the system that took her children from her, citing the need to spread love rather than bitterness. She helps guide people through processes that she went through alone, and with Camden Conversations and Camden Conversations 2, she is entrenching her mission into the system itself.
