Alice’s “Meeting” Story
On Wednesday, nestled within a busy virtual meeting, a long-due reunion took place. This week’s Friday story revisits a previous FGC story starring Alice. When Alice first met her social worker Martin, she welcomed him to ‘her neighbourhood.’ Since this initial meeting, they hosted an FGC meeting with coordinator Azara, in which her neighbourhood agreed to take care of her how she had taken care of them for many years. Alice has become a sort of ambassador for Family Group Conferences or, in her case, Community Group Conferences. The reunion took place in the Social Work Care Online seminar hosted by Camden in partnership with Leeds council and began with Martin displaying gifts from Alice. Martin held up a kente cloth from Alice’s home country of Ghana, an affectionate gift that led to a discussion on the value of offerings. Azara spoke about their shared Ghanaian culture of taking care of other people and how that contributed to Alice’s FGC plan where her community leapt to help take care of her. Alice spoke about living on her street for 72 years, raising her daughters there and her policy of being nice to neighbours who are nice to her. She was the caretaker of the block and is well known in her community. Martin pulled out a photo of her family, and Alice pointed herself out fondly, remembering her father, who taught her to dance, which is her favourite past-time. The panel were deeply moved by Alice’s story of community and remarked on the power of FGC, especially for adults. One panellist spoke about Alice’s vital standing in her community because not only is she known, she is needed there. Another panellist described FGC as a different way of thinking about services. In light of the current Euros tournament, he aptly used a football metaphor, FGC is ‘like turning a meeting from an away game to a home match.’
