Joshua’s Story

Joshua’s Family Group Conference was a neighbourhood coming together to care for him. James Owen met Joshua in a transitional period of his life, his grandmother was in palliative care, and he was moving from the estate where he grew up into foster care. James thought an FGC would gather Joshua’s network and keep them close during this significant change. James described ‘the beauty of FGC’ as a meeting bringing ‘all sorts of different people’ from ‘all over his [Joshua’s] life.’ He wanted to highlight to Joshua that although his home would be different, the relationships he already had were important. Joshua described the FGC as a ‘Friends Group Conference’. James and Joshua spent a lot of time building their relationship, playing football, going out for dinner and a visit to Greenwich to ride the cable car. Joshua spoke about Camden matching him to James because they had things in common; they could speak about films and music. James described walking with Joshua around his estate, meeting family friends, some of who had known him since birth. Everywhere they went, they were welcomed with a friendly face, open-door hospitality and stories about Joshua’s family. Once James had found foster carers, he worked with Cristina, the FGC coordinator, to set up the meeting. Cristina spoke about how easy it was to gather this network; many neighbours came, Joshua’s uncle, his friend network and foster parents. For James, it was powerful to see Joshua interact with his network, all of whom have committed to supporting him into adulthood. Joshua thought the meeting was definitely good at the time, making a plan with friends and family to set up times to meet and maintain relationships. Joshua was happy with the plan and said it was good to be listened to and to be in control of the meeting. The FGC modelled the network that was used for Joshua’s future social work meetings, putting him at the centre. Over the years, they have kept in touch despite James no longer being Joshua’s social worker. The two recently reunited at the Family Advisory Board’s Summer Wellness party and caught up. Joshua is living independently, working with the Young Inspectors and enjoys DJing. James spoke about the importance of when a child goes into care that they are set up right from the start, with the aim of a long-term supportive relationship.
