Delcia’s Story

A few years ago, Delcia attended her last Child in Need meeting. The meeting chair asked her if she wanted to try something new and explained that at the start Delcia and her social worker would face each other and speak about what was going well and what could be improved. Delcia’s first impression was that the layout of the room was different. Two chairs facing each other for herself and her social worker with the rest of the attendees spread out. Delcia and her social worker spoke about the plan and for the first time, she felt like the information was meant for her rather than addressed to the room. She felt safe to talk about what she didn’t want and speak freely without waiting on everyone else’s feedback. Delcia felt that this conversation also helped the professionals get to know her better beyond the report they had in their hands. This way, they could better design their feedback to her needs. This was a significant change compared to her first child protection meeting, where there was a room full of professionals speaking about issues that did not concern her but her ex-partner, who was not present at the meeting. She felt overwhelmed, so she kept quiet, unable to express who she was and her capabilities as a mother. Delcia wished she could have been introduced to Child Protection with a more collaborative approach, and she believes everyone in the room would have understood her and her family better. Currently, she is working with a mixed group of social workers, advanced practitioners and chairs to try this more family-led approach in more meetings. More collaboration means a more successful plan and an improved experience for families right from the start.
